BrightCove's AppCloud

BrightCove's AppCloud:
BrightCove, the video hosting company, has recently came out with a major push to market a new developer tool called AppCloud for cross-platform mobile application development. It allows application development using web technologies, and access device native features via JavaScript. The final application is then packaged into native applications on iOS and Android, which can then be submitted to the app store. This is targeted for applications that are designed to consumer content (e.g., blog reader, recipe apps, book apps etc.)
Now that sounds very similar to PhoneGap, which is also a native wrapper for JavaScript APIs. But the AppCloud has some nice tools that go beyond the plain PhoneGap:
  • The AppCloud also provides integrated content services such as ready-to-use blog parsers, automatic resizing of images, auto-cache of content on the device etc.
  • Coming from a video hosting company, the AppCloud provides a great video playback widget.
  • It provides an development tool that allows you to drag and drop to create your user interface.
  • Built-in advertising and analytics support
The AppCloud is available as an Open Source / Free product. But you can pay for premium support.
